Essential Oils for a Healthier Flock

 1. Coop Cleaning & Disinfection

Essential oils can enhance your coop cleaning routine by acting as natural disinfectants with antimicrobial and antiviral properties.

DIY Coop Spray Recipe:

- 2 cups water

- 1 cup white vinegar

- 10 drops Lemon essential oil (natural degreaser and antibacterial)

- 5 drops Tea Tree oil (antifungal and antiviral)

Optional: 5 drops Lavender for a fresh, calming scent

Spray onto roosts, walls, and corners during regular cleanings. Let it air dry. Avoid direct spraying around food and water areas.

2. Natural Pest Control

Essential oils are a great line of defense against common chicken pests like mites, lice, and flies.

Oils that repel pests:

  • Eucalyptus & Peppermint: Strong scents that repel mites and flies.

  • Cedarwood: Helps deter lice and insects in bedding.

  • Lemongrass: Great for overall insect control.

How to use:

  • Add 1-2 drops to nesting box herbs or mix into a natural spray (always diluted).

  • You can also soak wooden coop perches in a mild essential oil solution to discourage mites—just ensure it's fully dry before chickens use it.

3. Calming Stressed Chickens

Chickens can get stressed during changes in weather, the introduction of new flock members, or noisy surroundings. Lavender and Roman Chamomile are known for their calming properties—not just for humans, but for hens too!

How to use:

  • Diffuse Lavender oil near (not inside) the coop for a few hours in the evening to promote a peaceful nighttime environment.

  • Place dried lavender flowers with a drop of oil in nesting boxes for a relaxing effect.

Tip: Never apply oils directly on chickens. Instead, use indirect methods like diffusers or infused herbs.

4. DIY Nesting Box Herbs + Essential Oils

Aromatic herbs and essential oils can turn nesting boxes into spa-like retreats for your hens—encouraging them to lay comfortably and helping reduce odor and insects.

Nest box mix idea:

  • Dried Lavender

  • Dried Rosemary

  • Dried Mint

  • A few drops of Lavender or Eucalyptus essential oil

Toss into nest boxes weekly, and your chickens will enjoy a fresher, more comfortable laying area.

⚠️ Safety Guidelines for Using Oils with Chickens

Chickens are more sensitive to strong aromas than humans, so always use essential oils diluted and in moderation. Here are a few quick rules:

  • Never apply oils directly to chickens.

  • Always diffuse in a well-ventilated space, not in closed coops.

  • Introduce new scents gradually—watch your flock’s behavior for any signs of distress.

  • When in doubt, use herbs infused with oils rather than the oils alone.

Happy Hens, Naturally

Integrating essential oils into your chicken care routine is a wonderful way to support your flock holistically. From creating a peaceful nesting area to naturally cleaning their space and keeping pests at bay, these simple practices help create a healthier environment for your hens—and a more sustainable one for you.
